To date, skills-based workshops have been made available to many librarians in Canadian academic libraries; however, there have been very few opportunities for researching CARL librarians to come together and work on their research in an intensive workshop setting. The inaugural Librarians’ Research Institute will fill this gap by providing an intensive workshop experience for academic librarians to hone and further their research skills. The Canadian Association of Research Libraries is developing a unique Librarian Research Institute (LRI), which is designed provide an exciting learning opportunity for librarians who already have some foundational research experience.
Librarians’ Research Institute Objectives:
- To provide practicing academic librarians in Canada an opportunity to immerse themselves in sustained conversations and activities related to scholarly research, inquiry, and publishing.
- To provide Institute Participants with an intensive workshop experience, intended to take their current research projects to the next level (a conference paper to an article; an article to a larger project; several articles to a grant, etc.), as well as provide librarians with the opportunity to meet other researching librarians from across Canada.
- To allow each CARL library an opportunity to send at least one librarian to the inaugural offering of the Institute, so that they may return to their home institution to share their knowledge and enthusiasm about research with their peers and colleagues.
- To allow five to six accomplished Canadian librarian-researchers the opportunity to work together as Institute Peer Mentors. These librarians will have a proven research record and an active, sustained research agenda. In consultation with the Educator Consultant, they will develop and deliver the content to the participants. The Institute will also provide an opportunity for Peer Mentors to connect with the other librarians doing a similar level of research in Canada, as well as meeting Institute Participants from across Canada.
- Finally, this Institute is a step toward building an infrastructure for librarian researchers across Canada and for building a community of our own researchers in CARL libraries. This infrastructure and community will be built by CARL librarians for CARL librarians.
